Martin Schimmel is professor and head of the Division of Gerodontology at the Department of Reconstructive Dentistry / School of Dental Medicine of the University of Bern (Switzerland). He graduated from the University of Mainz in Germany (undergraduate, Dr med dent) and the University of Geneva in Switzerland (Privat-Docent, MAS Oral Biol, board certified specialist of reconstructive dentistry SSO/SSRD).

He worked at the University of Leipzig as well as in private practice in Germany and the UK before he became a senior lecturer at the department for gerodontology and removable prosthodontics at the University of Geneva/ Switzerland in 2006. He serves on the executive board of the Geriatric Oral Research Group of the IADR as well as the European College of Gerodontology and the Swiss Dental Society for the Disabled and the Eldery. He became an ITI fellow in 2012 and received several academic awards including the IADR Unilever Hatton award for clinical research (senior category, Seattle 2013). His professional career comprises wide clinical experience in private practice, university settings and geriatric hospitals. His main research interests are implantology for elders, geriatric dentistry, removable CAD/ CAM prosthodontics and oral physiology.
